Artifact: SWOT Analysis
Reflection: The SWOT Analysis project was conducted in ITEC 7410 Instructional Technology Leadership. This artifact is an analysis of my school’s strategic plan, vision and technology plan. The artifact examined the strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats in a variety of educational technology areas.
Through the SWOT analysis, I was able to evaluate the current level of technology and technology usage at my high school. Along with analyzing and identifying concerns, I also had the opportunity to communicate suggestions that would improve the current levels of technology and technology usage in the school. Some of the suggestions that were developed and recommended for implementation through the evaluation of the SWOT analysis were, including LoTi Levels in teacher evaluation, increasing technology professional development and offer incentives for teacher professional development. I also recommended communicating outside of the school and bringing in the support of community to help further develop and support school improvement initiatives.
The SWOT analysis was a great example of how I incorporated the elements of Strategic Planning under the Standard of Visionary Leadership, found in the Instructional Technology Standards to design, develop, communicate and evaluate a technology improvement plan. This artifact illustrates how I was able evaluate, and offer suggestions to be implemented that further drive the successful integration of technology into teaching learning.
The SWOT Analysis was very a challenging and rewarding project. Anyone wanting to complete a SWOT needs to understand the importance of creating a truly object analysis with all of the data. Although being new to school afforded me a certain degree of objectivity. It also created challenges that anyone who is trying to complete a SWOT analysis needs to understand. If I were to complete this analysis again, I would have worked much closer with the staff to complete it. I should have been more cooperative with the staff in obtain all of the data to properly complete the project. Along with working closely with the staff, I should have also created my analysis with more of an emphasis on the subgroups that makeup the school.
The SWOT afforded me the opportunity to see how technology plans are designed and implemented at the school level. The knowledge I gained from successfully carrying out this project helped me further promote instructional technology in my school. I was able to use the new skills gained from this project to work with the staff and offer insight into the current role of instructional technology. I used the data from this analysis to make recommendations to the administration. Although, not all of my recommendations were implemented, I was able to start a real conversation and push initiatives that will make real positive change at the school. The impact of this artifact can be seen in the future use of the SWOT analysis template to bring about real change based on data. School wide changes in instructional technology and implementation will help to increase student engagement and increase overall student performance as seen in both formative and summative assessments.
