Artifact: ITEC 7430 Internet Safety and Tools of the Future
Reflection This artifact "Internet Safety and Tools of the Future" was created for ITEC 7430 Internet Tools in the Classroom. This artifact is a blog entry covering the topic Internet safety tools and best practices to facilitate and promote safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of technology. The tools and strategies to model and promote safe, healthy, legal & ethical use include; Common Sense Media, NetSmartz, BrainPopJr., and the KnowBullying app.
This artifact displays my mastery of Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use under standard IV, Digital Citizenship and Responsibility. This artifact began by first researching the issues associated with digital citizenship and the risks associated with digital access. Although I thought I understood the risks of digital access to minors, I was shocked to learn about some of the threats that exist. Cyberbullying and sexting are great issues that I thought I understood, however I was really taken aback by the depth of the issue. Fortunately my research included digital tools such as Netsmartz and BrainpopJr. that help to educate students about the risks of Internet safety. The KnowBullying app is a great Web 2.0 tool for parent, teachers and students, to help identify and report bullying before it gets out of hand.
As I continued my artifact I learned about the risks that exist with data threats. Many students do not understand how to secure their personal information. I learned that many students are much more trusting than adults, and as such share more information than they should. This artifact taught me the value of modeling proper digital citizenship and making students aware of the county student usage policies that already exist. Many students do not follow proper digital citizenship because they are unaware of what proper safe, healthy, legal and ethical use of technology means and looks like.
After completing this assignment, I learned a lot about the threats that exist on the Internet for students. I was aware of threats and need for safe, healthy, legal & ethical use of the Internet and digital resources, however I was surprised to learn the extent these issues. If I were to complete this blog entry again, I would have done more research into digital tools that help to address the issues presented by digital access. Access to the Internet does represent a threat, however there are many tools that deserve greater research. These tools need to be researched and evaluated to help protect and educate students on the responsible use of digital information and technologies.
This project greatly impacted my faculty development and student learning. After completing this artifact I began to reevaluate how we use technology in the classroom. Filtered school approved search engines such as NetTrekker, represent a safe and healthy replacement to less secure and filtered engines. I also created a student Internet usage policy and endorsed other staff member to do the same. The impact of this artifact can be seen in a decline in the number referrals issued for inappropriate use of digital tools. The impact of this artifact can also be assessed in an increase in lessons plans that incorporate digital citizenship.
