Reflections
Through this course I learned how technology can be used to engage students and drive instruction. The class taught me the skills needed to be leader of technology both in my school and the district. I learned how to use the Levels of Technology Use Implementation (LoTi) to create and evaluate technology instruction using the Engaged Learning Indicators (EL). Using LoTi and (EL) I was able to evaluate my own lessons for technology and engaged learning. Along with learning the tools and techniques for evaluating lessons I was also able to coach others as well. In the beginning evaluating a lesson and coaching others was difficult. As my understanding of 21st century teaching and learning grew, so did my confidence in my ability to coach others.
21st century learners need to have a truly authentic engaged learning experience. This course has taught me the value and importance of a student centered learning environment. Engaged learning begins by creating lessons that are authentic in nature and engage the interest of the learner. I learned that teachers need to engage students and offer them a learning experience that prepares them for the 21st century. Teachers need to engage students where they are and not force them to unplug from their online connected lives. The lessons should offer students real challenges that are authentic in nature and utilize project based learning.
The engaged learning project that I created in this class addresses the demands of the 21st century learner. Along with creating the project I took on the role of a technology coach as I aided, advised and mentored other students as they created their own project (NETS-C 2A). The engaged learning project allowed me to create and coach other teachers to create, lessons that utilized the power to student collaboration to bring the world into classroom (NETS-C 2C). With the help of my cohort I was able to create a lesson that was truly engaging students and utilized their higher order thinking skills (NETS-C 2D).
As I continue to grow in my understanding of what it means to be 21st century educator, I look forward to creating lessons and coaching others to create lessons that engage and inspire the future (NETS-C 6A).
